Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at Gardens at Arkanshire, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience begins with helping new residents feel at home. During a major transition, comfort often comes from knowing there are friendly people nearby who are ready to welcome, support, and answer questions.
Resident Ambassadors help create that feeling by dining with new residents and being available as a familiar resource. Sharing a meal can make the community feel less unfamiliar and gives new residents a natural opportunity to begin a conversation.
Those first questions matter, too. A new resident may wonder about meals, daily routines, activities, or who to go to for help. When another resident is prepared to answer those questions, the response can feel personal, approachable, and reassuring.
Some of the most meaningful ways ambassadors welcome someone new are also the simplest. Answering questions, offering a seat at the table, and being present during those first days can help a new resident feel less alone.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they may have more in common with one another. Being in a similar stage of life can create comfort and trust. A peer connection may make it easier for a new resident to ask questions, open up, or accept an invitation.
Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community by creating a positive and welcoming environment for guests and new residents. Their friendliness helps set the tone for connection, kindness, and belonging. Through simple support and everyday hospitality, they help new residents begin to feel comfortable in their new home.
Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
