Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
As a kid, I received school lunches through the meal program, and I firmly believe all schools should offer free lunches and breakfast to all students. The menu rarely featured anything unusual, but I could always choose from the salad bar or hamburger line if I didn’t like something.
If I could create a school lunch item from scratch, it would be the hamburger. The school’s version was a frozen patty, but I love hamburgers and believe that using a good cut of meat and a quality bun would make it so much better. The ultimate school lunch menu should include fresh food and what kids enjoy rather than resembling a typical cafeteria meal.

The secret to making the ultimate lunchbox meal is to prepare it with love, just the way you would want to eat it. To ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal, check your labels for a good source of protein without excessive carbs and junk food. Also, be careful when packing lunch to avoid smashing the food or letting it get soggy.
For a breakfast box, I would love to see items like a breakfast burrito, eggs with green chilis, sausage with cheese sauce, and potatoes.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Gardens at Arkanshire Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
